Summer 2024 updates from our ProtectFish Project’s field work!

During the 2024 summer months, Kurt Pinter, representative of our project partner Universität für Bodenkultur Wien has investigated together with his team the San River in Lesko (Poland) for their upcoming field studies in the region.

On the agenda during this visit:

  • Discussing the boundaries of the field study site,
  • Exploring the sampling strategies, and
  • Getting in contact with local fishing authorities

This field trip allowed Kurt and his team also to learn more about the river habitats conditions, the local Fish stocks and current Cormorant situation.

Extensive field studies are crucial for our ProtectFish project and will be conducted across six EU Member States (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland) to assess how modifying the cormorant predation pressure impacts the conservation status of riverine fish populations.

These field studies will allow the project to:

  • Analyse the reactions of cormorants to fish protection measures and studying how habitat quality and complexity support fish protection;
  • Investigate the areas around cormorant roosts affected by predation and analyzing the effects of landscape parameters on predation intensity.
